Melbourne Arkansas
History
Melbourne, Arkansas, has a rich history as the Izard County seat since 1875. Settlers arrived before 1820, and a post office named Mill Creek opened in 1854. After county boundaries shifted in 1873, efforts to relocate the county seat led to Melbourne’s founding, and it was officially incorporated on May 4, 1878.
Early businesses included a mercantile store, hotels, stables, and a steam grist mill. Newspapers like the Melbourne Clipper, established in 1873, later became the Izard County Register. The town grew steadily, with highway construction in 1925 improving access. By 1928, Melbourne had its first electricity plant and an ice plant.
Today, Melbourne serves as a governmental and commercial hub and is home to Ozarka College, a regional educational institution.
